9. EU funding New Life 2011
The NEW LIFE project (LIFE10 ENV/IT/0400) was designed to verify the reproducibility, on a large scale, of the method and process of reconstitution: with it it was possible, for six years, to carry out a work of restoration of a heavily degraded area, conducting important research and demonstrating the environmental, agronomic and economic feasibility of reconstitution.
To achieve this, fertile soils were produced from degraded soils and alluvial sediments converting a desertified surface of over 100,000 m² to the environment, associating ? with the coverage of the area with ? reconstituted soils the planting of native tree and shrub species.
Two major environmental and economic issues were developed in the project:
– creating a perfect circular economy model by recovering large quantities of waste from specific production activities;
– demonstrating the ability to produce a suitable substrate for agro-forestry restoration (techno-soil/anthropo-soil) even without the use of natural land, allowing soil savings, a valuable non-renewable resource.
