21. Degraded sandy soils VI° yard 2020


At the same time as the experimental reconstitution activities carried out for the AGRISED project, the fifth site was launched to restore a large agricultural area of degraded sandy soils located in the municipality of Piacenza, Loc. He's dying.
The soils originally had a very poor supply of organic matter, with an absent state of aggregation and low water retention and a very poor ability to adsorb nutrients: on the basis of the mineralization coefficients, the soils of the site could, a few decades, reach the conditions typical of desertified soils.
The intervention was also justified by the low Cation Exchange Capacity and the high salinity in some areas of the area.

At the end of the construction site the soils of the area had reached an optimal fertility condition with the improvement of the following properties:

  • Increase in aggregation status
  • Increased water retention capacity of soils
  • Stabilisation of thermal developments
  • Reduction of leaching water and nutrient loss
  • Rebalancing of nutrient concentration, reduction of strong concentration variations
  • Reduction of pH
  • Decrease in salinity
  • Increase in organic matter; Strong increase in humic fractions
  • Increased availability of phosphorus
  • Achieving an Ideal Carbon ? Ratio Nitrogen
  • Balance of the Potassium ? ratio Magnesium
  • Strong increase in Cation Exchange Capacity

The remarkable importance of this intervention, accompanied by important studies on the transformation undergone by the soils, was represented by the great possibilities of improving the sandy soils to increase their overall fertility. With this work it was possible to maintain the positive aspects of the sandy soils by correcting the negative ones by obtaining a soil with wider possibilities for yield and crop diversification.
