Journal of Soil and Sediments: Negative impact of alluvial sediments on physical properties of agricultural soils affected by flooding in May 2023 in Emilia Romagna Region (Northern Italy)

Floods are considered to be the main threat to the loss of soil suitability for agricultural purposes in floodplain agroecosystems. The work published in the prestigious Journal of Soil and Sediments addressed the two particularly significant aspects of the problem, namely: how floods affect the soil of agricultural land and whether the mixing of deposited sediments with covered soil can be considered a suitable practice to preserve soil functionality.

The study was carried out on three agricultural land in the Emilia-Romagna region affected by floods in May 2023.
In the study sites analysed, the floods had a significant impact on the physical properties of the soil due to the higher silt content and lower organic carbon content of the deposited sediments compared to the covered soil. To address these issues and enable agricultural productivity, the addition of organic soil improvers may be suggested for their cost-effectiveness.
