The remediation sector Ecosistemi with the collaboration of the laboratories of the company has carried out an experiment for the verification of the bioremediation efficiency of contaminated soils through pilot tests on columns of undisturbed soil
The experimentation is carried out to verify the validity of the method and provide the parameters suitable for the optimization of the treatment for the design study
An area of about 100,000 square meters (10 ha) is affected by the wide contamination of a processing waste contained in containment tanks that, over time, has been dispersed into the environment due to leakage and infiltration into the subsoil.
The remediation intervention with the entire removal of contaminated soils would have represented an unaffordable and unsustainable cost also from the environmental point of view related to material handling, transport to landfill and disposal.
Fossa survey to verify and quantify the spread of the contaminant
The tests carried out by our laboratory have demonstrated the potential for an in situ treatment – without soil removal – aimed at natural attenuation by means of a physico-chemical-biological process. The contaminating chemical (ammonium sulphate), in fact, could be removed by means of a specifically distributed air insufflation treatment aimed at oxidation and stripping of the pollutant by reducing its concentration over time. The results of the study were applied to the strategies and design of the intervention on the site.
Following physical, chemical and microbiological treatments on contaminated soils taken in the area, column reactors were set up in the laboratory within which undisturbed soil samples were treated.
